Bhagyalakshmi is an Indian dubbing artist, actress, activist, and author born on 1 November 1962 in Palakkad, Kerala, to Kumaran Nair (who ran a restaurant in Palakkad) and Bhargavi Amma. She lost her father at the age of three and was subsequently sent to an orphanage in Vellimadukunnu, Kozhikode, where she spent several years before her grandmother brought her and her siblings to Chennai, where she entered the Malayalam film industry. She has an elder sister, Indira Nair, and an elder brother, Unni Nair. She completed her Plus Two education while simultaneously working in the film industry. She was previously married to K. Ramesh Kumar (27 October 1985); they separated in 2011 and divorced in September 2014. They have two sons, Nitin and Sachin. She began her career as a dubbing artist at age 10, with her first noted film being Aparadhi (1977). She rose to prominence dubbing for Sumalatha's character in Kolilakkam (1981) and subsequently became the primary dubbing voice for Shobana in hundreds of Malayalam films, as well as for Revathi, Urvashi, Tabu, Nandita Das, Jyothika, Ramya Krishnan, Urmila Matondkar, and many more South Indian actresses. She has dubbed for over 4,000 films and holds the record for the most Kerala State Film Awards won by a dubbing artist (1991, 1995, 2002, 2012). As an actress she debuted in Manassu (1973) as a child artist and has appeared in around 18 films. In 2012 she published her autobiography Swarabhedhangal (DC Books), which won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Biography and Autobiography. In September 2020, she confronted YouTuber Vijay P. Nair at his Thiruvananthapuram residence alongside activists Diya Sana and Sreelakshmi Arakkal, smearing motor oil on him after he posted a video with derogatory remarks about feminist activists. She faced criminal charges including criminal trespass; the Kerala High Court granted anticipatory bail in November 2020. She entered Bigg Boss Malayalam Season 3 on 14 February 2021, four months after the incident, and was evicted in Week 7, finishing fifteenth.
