He completed his schooling at JRK Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai, and briefly studied corporate science at Presidency College, Chennai, before leaving to pursue a film career. He married popular South Indian actress Kalyani (Kaveri) on 15 May 2005. As a child actor known as Master Suresh, he worked in over 200 South Indian films, appearing alongside Chiranjeevi, Akkineni Nagarjuna (playing young Nagarjuna in Sankeertana in 1987), and Rajinikanth, among others. His Tamil film debut as a child was Mouna Geethangal (1981) and his Malayalam debut was Snehikkan Oru Pennu (1978). He transitioned to direction and made his directorial debut with the Telugu hit Satyam (2003), produced by Nagarjuna Akkineni and starring Sumanth - the film was both a commercial success and received praise for its direction. He subsequently directed Khatarnak (2006) starring Ravi Teja and Ileana D'Cruz, Brahmastram (2006), Raju Bhai (2007), and Chapter 6 (2014), and worked as a screenwriter on various South Indian productions. His post-Satyam films did not replicate its commercial success, and offers dried up in subsequent years. In 2020, Surya Kiran participated in Bigg Boss Telugu Season 4. Due to challenges with communicating in Telugu and his performance in early tasks, he received the least public votes and was the first contestant evicted from the season, leaving the house in Week 1 (Day 6), finishing nineteenth and last.
