Harjeet Singh Sehgal (हरजीत सिंह सेहगल), known professionally as Baba Sehgal, is an Indian rapper, singer, actor, and music director born on 23 November 1965 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his B.Tech from G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology and worked briefly as an engineer before choosing music. He is of Punjabi descent and is based in Mumbai. He is widely credited as India's first Hindi rapper, having pioneered hip-hop in India in the early 1990s — inspired by American hip-hop acts including MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice. His debut album Thanda Thanda Pani (1992, produced by Raamlaxman) was a massive commercial success, spawning the hit 'Dil Dhadke' which sold over a million cassettes. His follow-up singles and albums — including Main Bhi Madonna (1993), Baba Bachao Na (1993), Tora Tora (1995), and Welcome to Mumbai (2005) — cemented his reputation as a youth icon through the 1990s. He was the first Indian artist to have a music video broadcast on MTV Asia. He has released 30+ albums and composed the background music for the film Miss 420 (1994, Bollywood). He has appeared as an actor in Dilwale (1994), Bhagam Bhag (2006), and multiple other productions, and has hosted numerous television shows. In December 2006, he entered Bigg Boss Season 1 on Sony TV as the show's first wildcard contestant (Week 6, Day 48). He was evicted in Week 9, finishing eighth overall.
