M. Bala Murugan (எம். பாலமுருகன்), known professionally as Gana Bala (கானா பாலா), is an Indian Tamil playback singer, lyricist, actor, and advocate born on 20 June 1971 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He is the son of V. S. Mani and M. Punniyam. He studied Botany at Presidency College, Chennai, and later earned a Master's degree in Botany before also obtaining a law degree and practising as an advocate at Madras High Court. He is one of the most celebrated voices in the Gaana genre of Tamil music — the street-folk tradition of Chennai. His playback debut came with Pathinoru Peru Aattam from the film Piragu (2007), but nationwide fame arrived with his soul-stirring gaana songs Aadi Pona Aavani and Nadukadalula Kappal from Attakathi (2012, music by Yuvan Shankar Raja), which won him the Vikatan Award and Vijay Award for Best Playback Singer. He has since worked with top Tamil composers including A.R. Rahman, G.V. Prakash Kumar, and Srikanth Deva, and sang the iconic Ulagam Oruvanukka in Rajinikanth's Kabali (2016). He earlier won the reality singing show Gana Kuyil Pattu on Kalaignar TV (2008). He is a committed Ambedkarite and has contested local municipal elections twice. In 2017, he announced a self-imposed retirement from film singing to give younger artists opportunities. In October 2023, he entered Bigg Boss Tamil Season 7 as one of five wildcard contestants on Day 28. He was evicted in Week 7, finishing seventeenth overall.
