Sampat Pal Devi (born c. 1960) is an Indian social activist from the Banda district of Uttar Pradesh, in the Bundelkhand region. Born into a poor Gaderiya (shepherd) family, she was denied a formal education and married off at the age of 12, becoming a mother of five by 15. She worked for a period as a government health worker before becoming a full-time social crusader. In 2006, she founded the Gulabi Gang (Pink Gang) — a vigilante women's collective in which members wear pink saris and carry pink bamboo sticks. The organisation confronts domestic abusers, corrupt public officials, and injustice against the poor and lower castes. Under her leadership, the gang grew to over 270,000 members across Uttar Pradesh and inspired two documentary and feature films: Pink Saris (2010, Kim Longinotto) and Gulab Gang (2014, Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla). A book about her, Pink Sari Revolution by Amana Fontanella-Khan, was published in 2013. She was removed from the Gulabi Gang's leadership in March 2014 amid internal disputes. In 2012, she participated in Bigg Boss 6, lasting 32 days before eviction in week 5, finishing sixteenth.
