Bio
Monica Bedi is an Indian actress born on 18 January 1975 in Chabbewal village, Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, into a Punjabi Hindu family. Her parents emigrated to Drammen, Norway in 1979, where she was raised and studied at Borresen School. She subsequently completed a degree in English Literature at the University of Oxford. She returned to India in 1991 and began a modelling career before transitioning to acting. She made her acting debut with the Telugu film Taj Mahal (1995, produced by D. Ramanaidu) and Bollywood debut with Surakshaa (1994) alongside Saif Ali Khan. She went on to appear in over 30 films in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Bengali, with notable Bollywood credits including Jodi No.1 (2001, opposite Govinda), Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat (2001), and Sirphire (2012, Punjabi). Her personal life dominated headlines from 1999 onward through her relationship with gangster and D-Company associate Abu Salem — a relationship that made her an internationally wanted person. She was arrested in Lisbon, Portugal in 2002, charged with holding a forged passport, and extradited to India in 2005 following a landmark extradition agreement. After serving time in custody and standing trial, the Bombay High Court upheld her acquittal in 2019, clearing her of all charges. She rebuilt her career with the acclaimed Sanjay Leela Bhansali-produced Star Plus serial Saraswatichandra (2013–14), playing Gumaan Kaur Vyas — a performance that earned her new critical respect. She also participated in Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 3 and Desi Girl. In August 2008, she entered Bigg Boss Season 2 hosted by Shilpa Shetty as one of the original contestants. She was evicted in Week 6, then re-entered on Day 49 as a returnee, competing until Week 13 before being eliminated again on Day 86. She finished fifth overall.
